Process Improvement

Communication

  • Realized a dramatic improvement in HP’s internal network management by creating more effective network traffic reports. Invented and tested network congestion hypotheses together with network engineers, determined key statistics, and designed a system to pre-calculate and store those key statistics, which led to a 90% reduction in the time required to produce network traffic reports.
  • Managed migration of HP’s company-wide global general ledger data into replacement system. Ensured data integrity, migration of maintenance scripts, accuracy of financial reporting to executive management, shareholders, IRS and SEC. Delivered results on schedule and on budget.
  • Managed data integrity for Agilent’s employee stock option benefit system. Created offline databases and data translation scripts to enable on-time data migration for two large acquisitions and one large divestiture.
  • Cut 2 weeks out of implementation time by including multi-functional participation at earlier phase of vendor outsourcing process for Agilent’s employee retirement benefits.
  • Saved $40k/year by designing and implementing a batch job monitoring system, which notified support engineers when batch jobs had runtime errors and reduced the investigation required when a job failed.
  • Designed and implemented a patch panel system to connect terminals in HP’s customer training center classrooms to computers in the data center. Eliminated 90% of classroom interruptions from accidental disconnections, and reduced setup time by 75%.
  • Researched and revised the DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan) for Agilent’s stock option administration system. Discovered incorrect procedures which prevented restoration of the database from backup tapes. Analyzed the problem, fixed the procedures, tested the DRP, and restored the database. This allowed us to pass an internal audit as well as preparing for a disaster.
  • Created and delivered a training curriculum for outsourced 24 x 7 helpdesk personnel to use internally developed calling card administration system.
  • Negotiated a more beneficial service level agreement with the data center while writing a comprehensive departmental computer security plan which also allowed the department to pass an internal audit.

Project Management

  • Reduced HP’s monthly financial close cycle by one full day across the entire company globally, by replacing the general ledger application. Completed replacement general ledger application on-time and on-budget in multi-functional, geographically dispersed team.
  • Closed the financial books on time every month during phased development of a replacement financial reporting system for HP Consulting, while providing 24 x 7 deep support of the monthly financial close activities.
  • Cut 2 full days from HP Consulting’s monthly financial close cycle by creating a consolidated global financial reporting system with regional data capture. The system greatly enhanced the level of detail available in global financial reports by allowing analysts to “drill-down” from global summaries into detailed regional data.
  • Created administration system for HP’s employee calling cards. Reduced department’s intra-corporate billing transactions by 25% and reduced administration effort by 50%, allowing redeployment of 2 full-time positions.
  • Designed and implemented a batch job monitoring system which was in continuous daily use for 5 years with no failures, no revisions, and no enhancement requests.
  • Created test plans, consulted on data model, conducted code walkthroughs and tested a networked client-server application that allowed the General Conference of the United Methodist Church to carry 20,000 petitions through their legislative process. My volunteer efforts caught several significant issues early enough in the design effort to allow rapid corrections, and got the application delivered on time.
  • Saved HP $300k/year by gracefully decommissioning old general ledger system after migrating to replacement system. Ensured legal and regulatory compliance as well as data integrity between old and new systems.
  • Managed the creation of a source code version control library for HP’s Corporate Financial Reporting department. I recognized the need, championed the idea, gained management approval, researched tools, selected “rcs”, implemented the library, added the source code, and trained other developers on check-out and check-in procedures. This eliminated version-related rework that the team had experienced.
  • Leveraged organizational metadata from a financial reporting application into rapid development of a consulting engagement management system.
